Is It Safe to Try This 'Forbidden' Sex Act While Pregnant?​​​Although it’s normal for parents-to-be to have concerns, we’ve heard time and again that having sex while pregnant is perfectly safe. But what about when it comes to anal sex? Is the risqué act too risky when you’re expecting?

Dr. Alyssa Dweck, OB/GYN and healthy mama® brand medical advisory board member, says no, although there are a few caveats.

Here’s the deal:

“The anal sphincter is very toned and tight, so plenty of lubricant is needed for smoother entry and to decrease discomfort for all women, whether or not you’re pregnant,” advises Dr. Dweck.

But with pregnancy comes one particular complication associated with anal sex: “Pregnant women very commonly have hemorrhoids, dilated veins around the rectum that may bulge or bleed,” Dr. Dweck notes. “Anal sex can irritate and traumatize hemorrhoids causing bleeding that can be quite significant or pain.”
