Do women really need an annual trip to the gyno? Ask the expert!
Many women ask me if they actually need to make a yearly appointment with their gyno, especially since in many cases a Pap is no longer needed every year. If everything seems healthy then is it really necessary? https://www.usatoday.com/news/health/story/2012-08-01/gynocologist-guidelines/56665748/1#.UDkmZjkrTjo.email
My answer is unequivocally yes! Yes, I think you should make a regular trip to your gyno (not simply because that’s how I make a living) but because it’s part of a holistic approach to women’s health. An annual visit encompasses so much more than a pap smear and may not even include a pelvic exam in some cases. The annual well woman visit centers on counseling, education and prevention. Year to year issues arise regarding your period, infection, contraception, sexual issues, pregnancy and family history to name a few. Just like you should visit the dentist once or twice a year to make sure everything is healthy up there, you should visit the gyno to make sure everything is normal down there.
Visiting the gynecologist on a regular basis can be a ritual for women, a time when they can take charge of their health. In fact, it’s a rite of passage. By establishing a thorough and up to date medical history, you and your doctor will then be able to keep an eye out for changes and act fast if anything appears different. Potential issues can be caught early (or better yet: prevented altogether) by discovering your baseline health and noting any changes or irregularities. Your yearly gynecological appointment is a time for you to ask all of those questions that might be a bit too personal to ask anyone else and you have the full attention of someone who actually knows what she’s talking about! It shouldn’t take a medical emergency to get you to go to the doctor! After all, it’s like a trip to the “V” spa… kind of.
